Studying Love

Foreword

Just as painters and sculptors study the human form in life drawing classes, noting the shape, form, movement, accessing from their own vital soul, a manner of seeing, of feeling, of communing with body, flesh, energy, my poems in this volume, is an act in the same vein.  Life drawing with words, however, not charcoal.

In wishing to create a work about love, I have chosen to study the interaction of two individuals, imbuing their particular dance of love, with all manner of imagery, all manner of emotion, all manner of romantic yearning, culminating in the final five poems which aim at drawing blood.  Claws digging in deeply.  Upon a shoulder, across a face, tearing open a heart, tenaciously aggravating a pulse, to force it to move faster, with anger, rage, and a healthy drop of raucous laughter.
These are not poems of platonic love. Nor are they the poems of love from a mother to her daughters, or a man to his son.  These are poems of lover to lover.  Lover from lover.  These words aim at presenting one view from one human.  One view only.
After all, what is love?  How is love manifested?  Is there a manual for me?  For you?  For us to enjoy on a sandy beach, or while lying, dying upon a sterile hospital bed?  While holding hands watching a Sea Gull in flight?
Love is what love is.  Eternal.  Harsh.  Boiling.  Savage.  Tender.  Renewed.  Worn out.  Worn down.  Fired. Tired.  Fresh. Vital.
