Speaking Through the Opening
Allowing Your Life to be Your Poem
Soul Painting
By Eric Ashford
From:
Speaking Through the Opening: Allowing Your Life to
be Your Poem
Poets are painters
and the paints they use are their soul colors.
No one can see how deep the ocean is
or how deep the shore is,
but we know each other
by
what we reveal.
Between the sea and the sky
seagulls turn to fish the light,
mewing like stray cats.
Poets belong to the waves and the tides
like the moon and the calls of seagulls.
Poets do not use a slide rule or compass
to measure reality.
Myth is made actual by their words.
They speak from the center of their poems
and bid the world to dream of itself.
They show us how the waves can be.
