Alba the Spanish Woman

Foreword

Alba the Spanish Woman, the final book in my present poetry series, was inspired by individuals for whom I feel the deepest love and gratitude. Those individuals are from two different cities.  Thousands of miles apart.  Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, and Peterborough, Canada.

In the steaming red blast of the noonday sun of that teeming South American city, where lush green and savage reds and yellows and purples of fertile nature grew, I came to know friendship and joy.  I came to own my very will, at a time when I thought I was emptied of all.
And in Peterborough, the first city I can call home, leaving only to decide if I loved it enough to return.  I returned.  Even with the ache and fear of starting over from the ground up.  With acknowledging that cancer knows no boundaries. I feel a raw and deep clarity and connecting here.  Coffee at bright yellow Dreams and Beans.  And admiring the multitude of Canada Geese that wing their way close by my windows.
And these poems are for Alba, the Spanish woman, who cleaned and scrubbed, and worked daily from before the sun was up, to long after it went down. With dignity, focus, and intensity, she moved.
Lastly, these poems are for my two Canadian women, my daughters, who make the words flow out, and who inspire me to choose to thrive, when at times, surviving seems enough.
With this last book in this series, a new journey, writing and living with words, begins.

L’a Chaim.  To life.
